Hi, Hello, and Hey

If we start an informal letter with words like 'Hi', 'Hello' and 'Hey', do we use a comma or period after these words? I say the period is the correct choice, technically. Do you agree?

It's a greeting, so I'd use a comma, as I would with eg Dear Mr Smith,

But in informal communications, such matters can be handled loosely.
