Fight Pollution

Throughout the last fifty years, environmental pollution has increased to a great extent in every city of the world, and ours is not the exception. As population in our city increases, more factories are needed to provide the basic requirements of everyday life and more cars are also needed for people to commute to their jobs. All these proved to be detrimental to our environment. What should we do to solve the problem of pollution before it is too late?

In the past, people used to go to the river and swim in it in sunny days. Nowadays, the water is contaminated with chemical waste and litter. As a consequence, citizens cannot swim in the river or spend their free time relaxing on its banks. A possible solution to this matter would be imposing heavy fines on factories which contaminate the water. Another solution would be installing litter bins in public places. Moreover, organizing campaigns at schools to raise awareness in children can also help fight pollution. A drawback to this is that campaigns take a long time to achieve the desired effect.

Another major problem affecting our city is air pollution. Over the last years, the air has become polluted with fumes from vehicles and industry. This causes serious problems to people’s health. Individuals can help protect the air and their health by using public transport whenever possible. In some cities, cars are preferred because public buses are not comfortable since people have to travel standing many times. In cases like this, sharing lifts are a good alternative to reduce traffic congestions and vehicle emissions on the road. In addition, having less cars on the road will prevent road accidents.

To sum up, the solutions to the problem of pollution are many. However, many of us think that the responsibility falls on the government. But that truth is that people should not expect the government to provide all the solutions. Individuals should start by doing a little something every day so the world becomes a better place to live in. If we always blame others for the problems, we will never resolve the issue.
