History will often judge Hitler and Stalin harshly, as they single handedly brought their societies down to their lowest point. However, they are politically different and are from two extremes of the political spectrum. Society over the years has produced many literary examples that criticize their doctrines. In both books, Animal Farm and Lord of the files, greed plays an important role in the degeneration of their societies. In Animal Farm, Napoleon is the chief scoundrel. As time goes by, he becomes greedy, and has an insatiable appetite for power. Orwell explains, “Somehow it seemed as though the farm had grown richer without making the animals themselves any richer – except for the pigs and the gods.”(Orwell 101). Greed is also portrayed in the way the seven rules are abridged to meet Napoleon’s greed. The most troubling of the new rules are, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”(Orwell 114). In Lord of the flies, Jack is the chief architect of greed. All he cares about is hunting, and not tending fire so that they can get off the island. He cares about himself, his needs, and not the needs of others. He introduces war paint when hunting. He returns from a successful hunt and emerges from the jungle chanting a bizarre song, “Kill the pig, Cut her throat! Spill her blood!”(Golding 69) He is so engrossed in his success and greed, that he overlooks the enraged Piggy and Ralph. Who confront him with the fact, that a ship passed by the island and there was no signal fire for them to see as it was a signal fire. Golding explains the two sides, saying, “There was the brilliant world of hunting, tactics, fierce exhilaration, skill, and there was the world of longing and baffled common sense. In conclusion, both Jack and Napoleon’s greed lead fueled their desire for power and caused the suffering of others.



An evil leader often uses fear and paranoia, to force others to submit to their rules. They often suspect other humans/animals of mistrust. Napoleon rules with feat, but is authoritative. Napoleon slaughters so many animals, who dare to protest against his cruel laws. He goes as far as hiring a pig to sample his food, making sure for certain, that no one is trying to poison his food. Orwell explains, “…the tale of confessions and executions went on, until there was a pile of corpses lying before Napoleon’s feet and the air was heavy with the smell of blood, which had been unknown since the expulsion of Jones.” (Orwell 74) This act of Napoleon can be likened to Stalin, who, after suspecting many people in his empire were supporters of Leon Trotsky (Orwell’s Napoleon), Stalin systematically murders many. Similarly, Jack created fear among the boys by raiding Ralph’s camp twice. He did this to prove to the boys that they are not safe with Ralph. He also uses fear of the beast to enhance, his own power over the boys. Their main intention was to raid Ralph’s camp was to steal Piggy’s glasses. They accomplished that successfully. Jack now felt like a chief now in truth, and he made stabbing motions with his spear. From his left hand dangled Piggy’s broken glasses. Now Ralph and the other boys would not able to make first, thus creating a sense of fear among the boys. As the fire in the book, symbolizes humanity and civilization. In addition, Jack uses the threat of beast, “—and then, the beast might come in. You remember how it crawled.” (Golding 160) However, the boys question Jack, saying that they had already killed the beast. Jack responds by telling them that the beast can back again. This can be compared to how Adolf Hitler, he used the threat of being surrounded by Jews in order to control the German people. In conclusion, Jack and Ralph abused the trust of their people in order to control their actions and behaviors.
