TV: Its Pros and Cons

Within a few decades, television has become an indispensible part of everyday life. We depend on it for entertainment, news, education, culture, weather, sports and even music. We see a TV almost in every home and it is increasingly common to find one in restaurants and cafes too. Its popularity among viewers is undeniable, although there are some who doubt about its actual advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, television offers lots of benefits. Above all, it is a major source of information. We can learn about current events locally and globally in just a few minutes. Nowadays, TV channels such as C5N, which is broadcasted 24 hours a day, provide important information as regards the weather condition and the traffic news- very useful if you have to go out. What is more, shared viewing gives family members of all ages an opportunity to spend time together. In addition, TV helps you unwind. After a long day, there is nothing more pleasant then to recline on the sofa while watching your favourite TV show.

On the other hand, however, television watching has its drawbacks. To begin with, the violence shown in TV programmes, movies and even news bulletin can make children and young people more afraid of the world around them. Some studies have shown that kids are more afraid of violence in news coverage than in other media content. Additionally, television viewing can cause you to gain weight. This is because it is a sedentary activity in which the time spent in front of the small screen is often at the expenses of more active pastimes. Apart from that, television is addictive. Viewers may lose the sense of time and spend many hours watching foolish soap operas which contain superficial behavior.

On balance, although television is one of the most tremendous inventions to these days, which keeps us informed and entertained, it must be used wisely. In this respect, it is the job responsible adults to search out high quality TV programmes for them and their kids, and whenever possible, enjoy them as a family.
