Hi, when is start a sentence normally i confuse so - then in sentences like this:

I didn't hear my alarm clock, so i only woke up at 8.30 am. In my last exam i put "then" ... for that i dont understand wich is the defference between these words. Help me please. Im not intelligent so or then I need help.
