Shalom, my name is Itay, I am 25 years old and I am a first year student of industrial Engineering and Management in Shenkar College, Ramat Gan, Israel. For a living I work as a security guard for the Ministry of Defence.
At the moment I share an apartment with my best friend near my College but I was born and raised in a nice small city named Rechovot, 25 minutes south of Tel Aviv. I have two older brothers, one older sister and two adorable nephews. I love playing the guitar, and I am Futsal player in the College team.
After graduating high-school at the age of 18 I enlisted to the army and served three years as a combat infantry in a small recon unit, there I have met some people that are my best friends up to this day (one of them is my roommate now). After the service I worked for a year, saved money and flew to spend most of the year of 2011 backpacking in South America.
This trip has changed my life. It has changed the way I think, the way I act, and way I observe the world. I went out for the purpose of knowing not only the views and the touristic places but mainly to really get to know the people that live there and there culture, and in order to do that I had to overcome a great barrier (besides money) – the language barrier, so I studied Spanish, starting from the basic grammar and I can honestly say that that was the best decision of my life after, of course choosing South America as a trip destination. I can go on and on about the things I have discovered there and the unforgettable generosity of the "locals" but I only have one and a half pages, so I will only say that what the people there had taught me about the Latin culture and the Latin way of life has really gotten into me.
After ten unbelievable months in South America I returned to Israel determined to preserve the things I have learned and of course the level of Spanish I have reached after 7 months of mainly speaking Spanish (3 out of the ten months I spoke Portuguese in Brazil), so in order to do that, me and two of my friends have started organizing Language-Exchange groups in a local bar in Tel Aviv where people can drink beer and have a nice conversation in any language they wish to learn. Right now we have groups of Portuguese, French, English and of course Spanish and the number of participants is only rising!!!
Also in January I went on a trip as a "local" with a group of young Jewish Brazilians throughout Israel for 5 days, on behalf of project Taglit which is a project that finance an eleven days trip to Israel for Jewish youngsters from all over the world in order to introduce them to the Israeli state and culture.
More than that, after my return to Israel I have decided to travel in Spain, but more accurate I have decided to travel in the southern side, Andalucía. Charmed by my favorite book "The Alchemist" (Paulo Coelho), I have dreamed of knowing this fascinating region with all its cultural wealth and nature, so you can only imagine how thrilled I was when I heard that there is a possibility of studying in Granada.
Professionally speaking, I am certain that studying abroad has great benefits to my future career, mainly because I am planning on having an international career after I graduate, and also learning that particular profession by lecturers that are not Israelis can only develop me more and enrich my knowledge.
I am really excited and thankful for having this opportunity of applying to the university of Granada and I am hopeful you will accept my application.
Sincerely yours
Itay
