The book English Phrasal Verbs in Use: Advanced lists this example sentence:

He's kept his old bike as a standby.

I sometimes say things like the following (probably influenced by my computer education, where the word backup is extremely common):

He's kept his old bike as a backup.

Is my usage correct or shall I stick to the word standby?
