He's in your grade?

So I recently bumped into a family friend I had no idea I had and found out that he's my bother's friend. They went to the same high school but graduated a few years back. So when my brother told me this, I asked him:

"Wait, he's in your grade?" Or should it be:

"Wait, he was in your grade?" - Because they had already graduated so it's in the past?

' Was ' is more natural, as is 'your class ' (since they've graduated).

Wait, so are you saying is isn't absolutely wrong? But was is preferred?

Much thanks.

I'm saying that the speaker could probably say that. I will always be a member of the Class of '60, for instance.
