I'm sorry about not giving the context- lazy me!
Here's the context:
There is a man explaining Siri (iPhone Siri ,before it became known to the world) to the lay person. And says "If you now have to know anything from your grandma's number to the number of stars in the Milky way, all you have to do is ask your Phone. Wondering how? Well, here's the gig"
I understand that in this context it must mean "explanation" but is such a usage common, can people understand it? Or is this just one man trying out his creativity with words?

Yes, I can understand it as 'explanation'. It is not the definition I would give, but the word is vague enough (as the word 'thing' is) to include that meaning if the speaker wishes to, I think.
