In the US, at least in the Northeast, a shade is a window covering that is more or less one piece of rather substantial material that sits rolled up at the top of the opening until you roll it down to block light. Curtains are ornamental pieces of textile, often rather flimsy, that hang down along the sides until you draw them sideways over the opening to block sight. You often have both on the same window. Drapes are heavy curtains that are meant for covering the entire business.
