Companies harvest and collect people's email addresses and as much private information as possible to generate targeted lists, for examples, females in the UK who tend to vote with the liberals and have grown kids. But it is best to avoid using these emails lists; they are not productive and may lose, not gain customers.

First of all, most emails sent to people on the list are unwanted. According to cybersecurity experts, 85% of all email traffic is spam, an average daily volume of 122.33 billion messages. The greatest proportion of this traffic (35%) is unsolicited advertising. These emails choke the internet and hamper people from using the internet for productive purposes. They also clog up people's inbox, and they have to take valuable minutes each day hitting the "delete" key.

Second, for the marketing company, it is one of the most unproductive forms of reaching out to customers. Companies specialize in bulk mailing, and they are not cost-free. So the merchant is paying for a service that mostly annoys people, driving off prospects. According to the statistics, this spam email costs businesses over $20 billion each year, and for what? The response frequency is one in 12.5 million. You would do better by buying lottery tickets, as the probability of a positive (not angry) response is higher. Your company's name may also be tarnished, as people bombarded by junk mail with your company's name on it will chat with their friends about how invasive, obnoxious and intrusive your company is. It also invites rival copycat companies which will produce cheap imitations of your high-quality, good products and undercut your profits. Your company's reputation as well as its profitability will quickly go down the toilet.

Third, a lot of this traffic does not end up in an inbox, where it is read, but in the consumers' spam folders. With a little bit of research and effort, each annoyed person can write filter rules to direct such unwanted junk mail to the trash folder. Thus quite a bit of the email that is sent out will never even be seen or read. And if they have to add yet another trash-this-mail filter, it will amplify the annoyance, especially, if you do not provide a visible, obvious opt-out or unsubscribe option that actually works in the content.

In conclusion, avoid using marketing email lists like the plague. They incur a cost, drive away potential customers, and clog up the internet pathways. There is nearly zero business value gained, but it represents a considerable risk to a company's reputation. Do not resort to such despicable tactics as bulk email lists. Especially pernicious are companies that collect and sell personal information. They are on the borderline of criminality and identity theft.
