Her school girl's fringe

She gave me a coy look from under her schoolgirl's fringe.

What is the meaning of 'her schoolgirl's fringe'?

Fringe means edge to a great extent. Of course we talk about the fringe benefits when it comes to the additional facillities/stuff.

The fringe is the hair that falls on the forehead, and is cut straight (more or less) at eyebrow level. It used to be (maybe still is) a hair-style common for young girls (schoolgirls). )

In the States, we call them "bangs" - though I have absolutely no idea why.
