Her husband OR His husband??

Hi,

Please don't laugh.

One thing had always confused me lot, that is, for married male (married to a female), which of the folliwng will be correct?

I am his husband

OR

I am her husband

If possible then please explain the difference.

Hi scottiger, and welcome to English Forums.

One thing to remember is that in English, we don't make any sort of adjective agree with the noun. We don't change it for number or gender.

Some people might thing it needs to be "his husband" because both are male, but once you remember that we don't ever change things based on the noun being modified, it will be easier to remember t

lots of people are confused what to use (whether I am her husband or his husband cuz they think i a man and his should be used without considering he is using it for her wife)

Hello Scott, Nothing wrong is there is to laugh. Most of the people get confused.

"I am her husband" is correct. This sentence will be used by married male by referring to his wife.

"I am his husband ". We should not use this sentence at all!!

We can use that. But if it's the spouse of a male, it's 'his spouse', and if it's the spouse of a female, it's 'her spouse'.

So the fact that 'spouse' can apply to both males and females doesn't change the fact that you have to choose between 'his
