Her eyes were like sherry

Zoila was tall and statuesque, with a graceful neck, much like a swan. Her hair was the color of hone, and her eyes were like sherry. But she was not a a sweet girl. In fact, she was spoiled like a rotten papaya.

I know sherry is a fortified wine, but I can't tell how eyes and sherry can be associated. Does the author write about the color of the eyes?

And I just read something where sherry was described as lavender in color. Hard to picture somehow.
