Henry Ford essay - check my grammar please

Envision yourself in the twentieth century; you’re a middle class American just trying to make it by. Most of the traveling you and your family do is on feet, due to the fact that cars are only available to the rich. Suddenly major focus turns on a man by the name of Henry Ford a brilliant revolutionist who has a vision to give middle class Americans a reason to feel relieved. His idea you may ask, is to produce mass quantities of cars at an affordable price. Henry ford a man responsible for single handedly reducing the price of automobiles by providing tools such as the moving assembly line which increased the production of cars allowing Henry Ford to lower prices and make automobiles available to not only the rich but middle class Americans as well.

“Henry Ford was born in a farmhouse on July 30,1863, near present-day Dearborn, Michigan.” He was the first born child out of eight , raised and taught mainly by his mother, “Who instilled in him a strong sense of responsibility, duty, and self-reliance.” Throughout his life Henry began to pickup and even taught himself to be a mechanic and machinist. As a young man he was filled heavily with ambition decided to leave the farm at the age of 16 and move to Detroit. Detroit was an up and coming industrial giant with many opportunities for young men to shine and make a name for them selves.

Henry instantly found work as an apprentice at a machine shop. Henry’s ambition kept him going, when only months later he began working with steam engines at the Detroit Dry Dock Co., this job for him was crucial due to the fact that it was the first time he had ever seen the internal combustion engine which he would later use to make his automobiles cheap to the American public. During this time Ford also managed to fall in love and “marry to his wife, Clara Bryant, she had grown up on a farm not far from Ford’s. They were married in 1888, and on November 6, 1893, she gave birth to their only child, Edsel Bryant.” “When he was 28 Ford decided to take a job with Thomas Edison’s (1847-1931) Detroit Illuminating Company, where he became chief engineer.” Ford later began attempting to build his own car, the first was known as the quadricycle. It’s appearance was irresistible to the human eye, not because of it’s fierce look but because it resembled a modern day baby carriage, and not to mention that his machine broke down in front of a large crowd in Detroit which made him a laughing stock to the town and a failure in the general publics eye.

Nevertheless good times were forthcoming for Mr. Ford in 1899 a wealthy business man by the name of William Murphy generously helped by giving Mr. Ford the assets to build a more proper-looking motor car. In the same year of this donation by William Murphy, Mr. Ford founded the Detroit Automobile Company and held the record for the world’s fastest automobile, which he accomplished in 1901 at Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He had not only grasped the public’s attention but also had them eating out of the palm of his hand, just five years ago he had failed miserably with his passed invention but now he had overcome adversity. With all of the publicity Ford was receiving he was able to fiancé a laboratory where he refined his auto idea. Only 2 years later Ford launched his own car company, The Ford motorcar company, this gave him the key to unlocking the door behind an affordable automobile. It was only shortly after where he unveiled the creation of the model T, a car that was affordable to the middle class. Model T’s were not only affordable but were constantly available due to the introduction of the assembly line. Doing this Ford not only changed the lives of the average American but gave them a dream that was only available to the rich, he did this through inexpensive ideas and “because of his introduction of the innovative moving assembly line into the process of industrial manufacturing.”

Controversies did begin to surround Ford, he was criticized for his totalitarian businesses practices; this includes how he treated his workers. Ford was the first person in the business industry to introduce time clocks to monitor every action a worker would take and do throughout the workday. He demanded the workers are always on time and was not the kind of boss to let workers call out of work. Ford also required that his foreign employees become United States citizens and learn to speak and write in English. Ford later received more criticism and dislike for being the only United States citizen mentioned in Hitler’s Mein Kampf , and being a main source of inspiration to Hitler. Hitler often quoted and praised Ford for his accomplishments in business and political views.
