hence

What is the proper way of punctuating the word 'hence'? I think I have been told that the word should be preceded by a full stop or at least a semi-colon. But then I often see people put it right after 'and' (i.e. ...and hence...) with no punctuation marks separating the word from what comes before and after. Some bracket it with commas (i.e. ...., hence, .....) Your view?

Thank you.

Hi, I'd say it depends very much on the particular sentence, eg on its length and complexity, but also on the meaning/feeling the writer wishes to convey.
