Help..My definition essay is due & i don't have a clue what I'm doing
This essay really stumped me. I'm not sure if I'm cut out to write a definition essay. I tried my best. Can you please look it over and offer any advice how I can improve it? Thank you.

A common word used in many households is Divorce. An official definition is a legal ending or separation of a marriage. It occurs when two people decide that they can no longer live together, and ending it will solve their problems.
The word divorce comes from the Latin word “divortere” meaning: separation, dissolution of a marriage. In past centuries, people considered marriage revered and divorce was not an alternative. People would rather stay in an unhappy marriage than be ridiculed by society. Many factors contribute to divorce: domestic violence, infidelity, desertion and even sexually unsatisfied. According to the National Center of Health Statistic, the divorce rate for the United State in 2003 is 3.8% per 1,000 population (46 reporting states and D.C.)
One of the most commons misconceptions about divorcing with children is that they should wait until the children are older. They do not realize that divorce is never easy at any age. I remember my parents divorce. I was 2 years old and my parents were arguing so intensely, they did not even notice I was in the room. When they saw me, my father turned and asked me directly, “who do you want to live with, mommy or daddy?” This devastated me. I could not answer because I did not want to have to choose between them. I wanted to live with both my parents. For my husband it was not any different. Although he was an adult when his parents divorced, it still affected him just as much as it affected me. Many people do not stop to think what divorce can do to each other or their families. Most are so engrossed in their own anger to notice the harm they cause. When children are involved, they run the risk of scarring them emotionally.
After the divorce comes reality. Both parties have to divide their assets, if children are involved, work out custody issues, and figure out how they can support themselves on single incomes. It is a big financial burden and it most often it will decrease the standard of living. In my opinion, divorce is not just a legal ending or separation of a marriage; it is a destruction of a family.

- Para two: You leap from the situation in the past to factors contributing to divorce - you need to make it clear you are changing topic here by using a new paragraph or some sort of linking phrase.
- Para three: Sentence one - who is the 'they' who should wait, only children are mentioned in this sentence, so it seems that the children should wait until the children are older.

This is very well written now. As for length, para 2 is fine (you ideally want to use varying para lengths through an essay) but overall, I don't know what length essay you have been asked to write...
