[Help]meaning of "take credit"?

hi everybody.i'm a beginner in english.
today i watch a film in seri-film friends.
and i don't understand a sentence : I take credit for him.
anyone can tell me what this sentence means?

Monica say "You know Paul?"and the conversation go on:
-Paul, the wine guy?
Yeah, I know Paul.
-You mean, you know Paul
like I know Paul?
-finally Monica's friend say :
