Help:learn to play the violin/learn to play violin

0My grammar book tells me that I should use the definite article "the" in front of musical instruments, such as "play the violin", and so on. But I also read some webpages on which people do not use the definite article "the" in front of musical instruments, such as "play violin", and so on. Which is right? or are both the cases (the use and non-use of the definite article "the" in front of musical instruments) acceptable?, and what are the differences between them if both are acceptable?02br
