THE SYMBOLIC RESISTANCE TO HEGEMONIC POWER OF NEW ORDER: A STUDY CASE OF W.S. RENDRA WORKS.

Abstract: WS Rendra became a differ from other poets in his time, because of his courage, intellegence,and his expertise in making counter hegemony to Orde Baru’s power hegemony that had strong influence and defense(Sarjono, 2001; Fatah, 2004). This research aimed to explain the causes, shapes, and strategies of W.S. Rendra’s symbolic resistance to the hegemonic power of Orde Baru. The theory that’s being used as a dagger of analysis is Gramsci’s Counter Hegemony Theory(Gramsci, 1999).

This research used the qualitative approach with the analytic layout of critical discourse of Michael Foucoult. The data research was the speech from W.S. Rendra’s work that was reduced into counter hegemony to hegemonic power.The data source was all of W.S. Rendra’s work. The data was coolected by documentation technique and the data verification was processed by triangulation technique, deep breafing with the expert judgement, either with humanists, literature experts, sociologists, and the political experts.

Acoording to data analysis, it was found that (1) the genuine cause of symbollic resistance is counter hegemony to manipulation of Pancasila ideology by hegemonic power of Orde Baru. (2) The form of symbollic resistance against hegemonic power was very subtle that has form of political communication in line with Java’s ethics principal in a form of sanepan and pasemon. (3) The symbollic resistance strategy was done through strategy of critisizing, giving solutions, and seeking supports from intellectual, civilian and military, fellow journalists inside the country and aboard so the fight gained backbone supports nationally and internationally.

The findings in this research was named counter hegemony Tirta Aji. It was the counter hegemony based on understanding of culture to build political collective consciousness that has ethics, using cultural machine based upon ideology of Pancasila.The counter hegemony Tirto Aji will be always relevant as long as the government and the elits are unwilling to learn from their own historical culture with today’s perspective; haven’t implemented the “Cultural Machine of People Sovoreignty”; and haven’t implemented the way of ethical politic according to ideology of Pancasila. Therefore, it is suggested that all structure in the country have to be implemented the “Cultural Machine” has to be in accordance with ideology of Pancasila. This research is not final findings and still got a lot of limitation. Thus, it is strongly suggested that further study must be done immediately with different dagger of analysis and different method.
