Helping me with my thesis/intro sentences

"They traveled to California in hopes for a better life. "

Is it "in" hopes or "through" their hopes? or is Hope singular?

"Despite the hardships they face, they find comfort in their dream to acquire a farm, a symbol of hope against life’s cruelty. "

they find comfort in their dream, or through their dream?

"However, society’s malevolence and apathy toward their dream makes it futile. "

Toward or Towards?

"The American dream cannot be realized through society’s corruption and prejudice."

Through society's corruption, or because of society's corruption? This is my thesis, is there any better way of saying this? Any suggestions for thesis making is especially welcome!
