Helped or Have Helped ?

1) If a player joins a basketball club, plays there for 3 years, decides to leave, has a press conference and wants to thank his coach, what does he say? Does he say: "Coach has helped me become the player that I am today" or "Coach helped me become the player that I am today? I personally think that it's the second one because the coach can't help the player any more.

2) If a player is the best at his sport and changes his agent, who is so frustrated that he says:
a) agent: I made you the player you are today
b) I've made you the player you are today
Again I think that it's the second one but I want to see if I'm correct

Hi ,
