Helped/ had helped.

I couldn't work out the problem until my teacher helped/ had helped.

Do these two make any difference?like-

For the 1st one( helped)- the past sense of 'I can't do until he helps me' ,that doesn't necessarily mean that my teacher helped me, & then I was able to solve, it's just that it was not possible for me to solve it without his help (not further stated if it actually happened)

For the 2nd one (had helped)- Yes, it happened, he helped & I solved, but until he helped, I couldn't do it myself.

Yes. The use of 'had helped' doesn't make sense. Here are the possibilities.

I can't work out the problem until my teacher helps me.
I couldn't work out the problem until my teacher helped me.

With 'unless' you have three possibilities.
