Helped children making them laught OR by making them laugh?

Hi,

Could you help me with this doubt?

Someone wrote:

1. Clown doctors help children making them laugh.

But anohter person wrote: 2. Clown doctors help children by making them laugh.

i think number 1 is correct. How about number 2?
