Help with writing to an Ambassado

this is a great site which I have just found and I would appreciate if users can advise me on how to write a extremely polite and well written letter to an old family friend an Ambassador of Japan.

this is what i have come up with so far and it really does need help !
notes:( *) means i'm not sure on the word/phrase/sentence to use

Let me take this opportunity to congratulate you on your current position and your previous position as the Ambassador of Japan to XXX

Please allow me to formally introduce myself hoping you will remember me from my family name and childhood years. I XXXX the son of the late Mr XXXX wich I am certain you will remember from your days in XXX in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

(*My reason for contacting you) in simply for the fact that I would be my (*pleasure/honour???) to(* establish??????) (* friendship/relationship) with yourself and your family again and hoping to meet you in person in the near future. Myself and my sister have been reminiscing the fantastic time we had in Japan back in XXX and ever grateful for you and your family’s kind and (*????) hospitality during our stay and your general kindness and (*??) towards my whole family in the past.

I have tried on many occations to contact you but unfortunaltey have not been succesfull.

I hope this letter finds you well and I look forward to hear from you at your earliest.

I hope you remember me: My name is *** , but you probably think of me as the son of *** , whom I'm certain you will remember from your days in *** in the late 1970s and early 1980s. As you may know, my father passed away in [year].

I'm writing simply in the hopes of reestablishing a relationship with you and your family as well as to express my congratulations on your new position.

My sister and I were recently reminiscing about the wonderful time we had in Japan back in *** and how much we appreciated you and your family’s warmth and hospitality during our stay, as well as the kindness you showed our family over the years. We have both followed your career with great interest and are so happy for your success.

I have tried on many occasions to contact you but unfortunately have not been successful. My contact information is found below. I hope to hear from you and I look forward to the prospect of seeing you again in the near future.

Always use a spell checker, and remember that there is nothing formal about the use of the words "yourself" or "myself." "Myself and my sister" is a hypercorrection of "My sister and I." If he is an old family friend, you shouldn't refer to your father as "Mr. so-and-so." I'm sure the person you're writing to called him "Peter" or whatever his first name is. You don't need to tell him what his prior job was -- he knows what it was.
