Help with the meaning

The following is an extract from a story written by Maupassant[Happiness]

In the story some people are discussing love :-

"Can one go on loving for several years in succession?"

"Yes", said some

"No", asserted others

They recognized distinctions of degree, set down limits, and brought forward examples.

My questions:-

what does "distinction of degree" refer to?

What are they setting down limits on?

Thanks in advance

"distinctions of degree" = "differences in the intensity" (of love)

"set down limits" = "set down limits of time" = "stated their opinions concerning the length of time" (one could go on loving.)

The people discussed how much one can love, with what intensity, and for how long, each having his own opinions on these points, and each giving examples as the discussion continued.
