Help with the meaning

Hallo,

Here is a paragraph and I find it difficult to understand some parts of it. I have put them in brackets.

" We camped there that night, and every night , in a compound. Once again, there were hundreds of people trying to sell something to us, or ask for money, [so we couldn't leave the compund during the night], or they never would have left us alone. We were cooking dinner at night, when the natives outside the compound suddenly started [going at it bigtime].It was some kind of big celebration. We were sitting arround the a fire with all these noise going on outside, and I could not resist saying, [' it sounds like the natives are restless']. Everybody roared with laughter after that.

1 - If they camped in a compound why did they want to leave the compund during the night?

2 - what does the phrase "going at it big time" mean? can I have other example sentences of the phrase with the same meaning?

3 - was this celebration seen by the narrator just for one night or every night?

4 - Is the last sentence in bracket funne enough to make people roar with lafter? could someone plz explain the humour in it?

Thanks

1. It is not stated why they would want to leave the compound. One can only guess that they had become tired of camping there "each and every night".
