Help with sentences

  1. Writing obituaries is/are hardly every teenager’s dream.
  2. Helping the poor is/are the Christian thing to do, according to the Christians.
  3. Cruelty to animals is/are widespread in those countries.

These three sentences have been bugging me, as I do not know whether it should be is or are.

Can somebody help and explain why it should be either is or are?

Thanks beforehand!
