Help with sentences

Are these sentences written correctly?

How long (has or had) it been since the last time they saw each other.

It was not working since I bought it.

Also, is the word 'since' correct in both sentences?

The past sentence you wrote is in the past perfect form, right?

Also, does 'since' work only with the past perfect?
