I don't remember what it is.
I don't remember what it was.

I don't remember what it was you gave me.
I don't remember what it is you gave me.

So you mean I have to say

I don't remember what it is you gave me. -- If I still have the item.
I don't remember what it was you gave me. -- I don't have the item.

Correct?

I don't remember what it was you told me.
I don't remember what it is you told me.

--What about the other two? Are they right as well?

Yes. It's a matter of viewpoint-- whether the speaker is thinking of the message then given or now remembered.
