Help with sentence

Is it correct to use 'are' or should it be 'were'?

Let's separate the house from the inside as if they 'are or were' two houses.

Are both possible?

It should be 'were', but you can't 'separate the house from the inside'. Perhaps you mean you want to divide/split the house internally.

Yes, that's what I meant. Thanks a lot.

Is 'were' the right word because it is not real or hypothetical in which it will not really be two houses?

Hi teacher, would you please tell me if my reason for the use of 'were' was correct?

Let's divide the house as if it were two houses.

The house is actually one building. But let's divide it into two separate living spaces anyway and pretend it is two houses.

Thanks. So is 'were' the correct choice and not 'are' because we are pretending that it is two houses, which is not real. Is that the reason?
