Help with passage below

He and the gang could numb the pain, escape to a fantasy world they created together. In that world, they were somebody's - operators with a hustle going on, feared and envied by people around them.

(This extract is taken from a book on drug addiction. It talks about how some youngsters used alcohol to escape their painful realities.)

I have two questions:

1. Why is it somebody's and not somebodies? (It is used in the plural, as far as I can tell. Somebody's is the possessive form, right?)

2. What does 'operators with a hustle going on' mean?

Thank you!
