Help with nouns

Question

I know that nouns describe people places and object but I am struggling on a couple of things.

I have to choose the appropriate nouns in the following sentences but not include pronouns.

I have highlighted in color which I think are nouns and put how many I think at end of sentence, could someone please check for me Thankyou

1. The new film directed by Ridley Scott showing at the Odeon is Gladiator. - 3

2. The sun was shining brightly yesterday - 1

3. The sun is shining brightly over Leeds not Wakefield - 3

4. My name is Mark but you can call me MJ - 2 (but not sure)

5. The furry feline quadrupted reclined upon the floor covering - 2

6. The bird perched on the branch of the tree singing ths beautiful song - 3

7. The beautiful picture in the gold frame hangs on the wall in the kitchen - 4

8. Although Osaka is big. Tokyo is, infact, the largest city in Japan - 4

9. The students in the class listened carefully to the teacher. - 3

10.I have 3000 CD's. 300 MD's and 150 DVD's in my collection in my house. - 4 (is collection a noun)

The word can also be a noun, if it is used as a noun. eg He bought a feline.

6. The bird perched on the branch of the tree singing ths beautiful song - 3

7. The beautiful picture in the gold frame hangs on the wall in the kitchen - 4

8. Although Osaka is big. Tokyo is, in fact, the largest city in Japan - 4

9. The students in the class listened carefully to the teacher. - 3

Isn't 'yesterday' an adverb here?

Hi,

Interesting question.

To tell you the truth, I've never thought of yesterday as an adverb, but to my surprise my dictionary shows it as one. It also lists it as a noun, of course.

Before accepting that idea, I'd be inclined to argue a bit.

For example, would you consider these as adverbs?

I called you the day before yesterday.

I'll call you Monday.

I'll call you next year.

But I think I'm going to lose this argument.

Just incase I am confusing anybody what the exercise is asking me on the above questions is:-

There are more nouns than any other type of word in the english language, These words describe people places and objects that is they refer to things for example

The dog barked at the man there are 2 nouns in this sentance dog and man

it then tells me to look at the following sentences and note the nouns that apear. I have to choose the appropriate number of nouns in each sentence from a list. Its says please do not include pronouns in my answer (these will be delt with later) so I am a liitle confused if my answers are correct or incorrect and if I have to add in what is in blue aswel thank you

My knowledge of grammar is nowhere near enough to win such an argument

'the day before yesterday' is probably an adverbial phrase that can be further disected into an article, noun, and two adverbs.

Could 'Monday' actually be a prepositional phrase where the preposition 'on' is omitted? Monday is a noun when it is a name, such as April.

I'm not sure about 'next year'. Maybe it is also a prepostional phrase where the preposition before 'next' is omitted.

I'm confused now

I really need to get myself a good grammar book once; all I ever find is bits and pieces that keep me guessing. (also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adverbial_phrase )

MJ are initials that represent nouns indirectly. Ask your teacher to explain that. I wouldn't count them as nouns here.

I didn't mean ignore him I just thought maybe I hadn't explained proper what I wanted and just wondered if it would still be the case after I had explained it proper.
