Help with motivation letter for PhD in Oral Sciences in Germany.
I have written a motivation letter with 7810 characters. I want to concise it to no more than 3000 characters. Can anybody help me in this matter. I will be very thankful.
Dear Sir / Madam, I am writing to apply for PhD programme in Oral Sciences at Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich, Germany.
I was privileged to be born into a family of two doctors – my mother is a gynecologist and my father is a general physician. So, from a very young age, I perceived healthcare as a noble profession and had no doubts about my future career in medicine. I also feel privileged that my parents, especially my mother had instilled the concept of community service which taught me humility and empathy towards the people, especially the poor.
When I was ten years old, I noticed how much pain and suffering gum disease caused to my grandmother and decided that it was my obligation to help her. At that time, I made my ultimate choice about the area I wanted in-dentistry.
My graduate training was at a dental school in a rural area of northern India, where illiteracy, poverty and social inequalities were rampant. I noticed that tooth decay and periodontal problems were the most common problems among the patients there, and majority of the patients had undergone dental restorations, root canal and periodontal treatments. However, those patients who could not afford such treatments, had no choice but to have their tooth / teeth extracted. I was really amazed by the sheer variety of cases in dental college, and thatgave me theopportunity to gain valuable experience. Thus, I developed a special interest in conservative dentistry, endodontics, and periodontology.
But, one question always remained in my mind--that although we were treating so many patients every day, the number of patients was still increasing. At that time, I realized that dental diseases is a public health problem that is rampant in India and realized that the majority of the dental diseases are dependent upon the life-style and personal behaviour.
I discussed this matter with many professors and dentists who advised me that if I really wanted to make a difference in terms of reducing oral diseases, I should opt for dental public health for my postgraduate dental training.
I was really in a dilemma at that time. I thought that one hand, I had great interest in endodontics and periodontology and wanted to pursue my further training in either of these branches, but on the other side, there was a branch of dentistry in which I had very little experience.
So, after much deliberation and reflection, I made up my mind to pursuemy postgraduate dental training in dental public health because I believe that it is the only way I can achieve my goal and help reduce the burden of oral diseases on a mass scale in India.
During my three years of postgraduate training in dental public health, I realized the importance of this branch in developing my skills, especially the research skills. I worked in a community dental clinic which was run by my department and completed two short term studies and a thesis during that period.
My first research project was a cross-sectional study, in which I had to find out the prevalence of dental caries in children aged 12 and 15 years old in government schools, where mycollege was situated. That was the first time, I experienced the real-life problems associated with data collection and the importance of meticulous planning in research. I also realized the importance of goodcommunication skills during thatproject. My second research was an in-vitro study in which I had to evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of chlorhexidine and Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) powder - an Indian medicinal herb. In this project, I learnt about the importance of inter-departmental coordination in completing a research project. After completing those two small research projects, I started working on my thesis in which I had to determine oral health status and the treatment needs of among sugar factory workers in sugar producing cities of South India. I firmly believe that the practical experience from my other two research projects helped me a lot in completing this project on time.
Although, our department was involved in many other oral health research projects including in endodontics and periodontology. I felt that there was a lack of inter-departmental coordination and because of that, our research standards did not matchinternational standards.
During that time, I was also interested in pursuing research in other fields of dentistry like endodontics and periodontology, and wanted to use my research skills in those branches.
I firmly believe that those three years of postgraduate training has helped me to develop my criticalthinking skills and to become a better researcher in my field.
I also realized that training in the general principles of public health is very important to gain wider knowledge ofpublic health including dental public health. This motivated me to pursue one more master’s in general public health. However, I realized that public health training is in nascent stages in India and I have to go outside India to pursue my training in public health.
After completing my postgraduate training in dental public health, I started working as senior lecturer in the Department of Dental Public Health in the NIMS Dental College. At the same time, I also looked for a country where I can get excellent training in public health. I found that European countries have one of the best public health training institutes in the world and I chose the University of Birmingham’s Master of Public Health (MPH) degree programme.
I believe that was one of the best decisions of my life. The practical nature of the training including the group discussions, assignments and STATA sessions helped me immensely to further develop my critical-thinking skills and broaden my knowledge regarding general the principles of public health. It also gave me a chance to understand how the principles of principles of public health can be applied to dental public health.
I firmly believe that the MPH experience at University of Birmingham made me a better dental public health researcher as well as practitioner. I also realized the differences in the research patterns of UK and India. I also got the chance to meet manyPhD students from College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. The university’s project regarding the increase of life expectancy up to ten years in breast cancer survivors excited me a lot and motivated me to pursue a PhD inoral sciences.
I also discussed this matter with my thesis supervisor, Dr. Miranda Pallan, who encouraged me to pursue a PhD in oral health sciences.
After completing my MPH, I came back to India and again started working as a senior lecturer in dental public health, but at the same time looked for a country who had a great reputation in the field of oral health research to do my PhD. I found that German universities had a great reputation in the field of oral sciences and decided to do my PhD at a German university. After searching on the internet and after long discussions with friends and professors, I decided to pursue my PhD at Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich.
I believe that PhD programme in Oral Sciences at LMU is one of the best in Europe. The research facilities at the dental school of LMU are world class and thestructured and interdisciplinary nature of the programme involving different departments like conservative, prosthodontic, orthodontic, paediatric dentistry and oral-maxillo-facial surgery has motivated me to apply for it.
Also, the faculty at the dental school of LMU are world famous and are experts in their respected fields. I do hope that my academic background and personal characteristics as well as my aspirations will satisfy selection committee, that I am a suitable candidate for the PhD in Oral Sciences at LMU.
Yours faithfully, Bhaskar Gupta
