I'm not an educator in the American public school system, but my experience in tutoring has showed me that it really helps to choose, or allow students to choose, texts that reflect their interests in subject matter for use in reading, writing, and analytical exercises. You can integrate various disciplines using the same text, for example expounding upon spelling and interesting etymologies of new vocabulary words, inspiring comprehension by oral quizzes on content, and drawing attention to aspects of style which you can discuss and have them emulate. In addition, you can spread your enthusiasm for excellent writing through media they are familiar with, for example, showing an engaging film adaptation of the text before they begin to study it.
