help with grammar in a sentece

Hi all natives! I have a question regarding grammar in one sentence of my song. I'm not sure if I can use the word "lack" in this way. here is the quote: "somewhere at night, where the hope was lack". please be so good to answer!

No, you need "was lacking."
And not "the hope," just "hope."
