Tourism provides numerous economic, environmental, and social benefits to nations compared to some trivial drawbacks identified in these spheres. Some of the economic benefits of tourism to a nation include the growth of the service sector such as hotel and transport as well as the increase in foreign exchange earnings. Tourism does not only boost the Gross Domestic Product of a nation but provides opportunities for people in the local communities to earn a living as tourists engage in lavish spending. Environmental benefits emerge due to the new form of tourism known as eco-tourism that emphasizes the need to conserve the environment through the sustainable development approach (Fatemeh et al. 523). The social benefits of tourism are realized when the cultural beliefs and practices of tourists enrich those of the local communities. The economic, environmental, and social benefits of tourism far outweigh the identified drawbacks.

Opponents of tourism cite some economic and social drawbacks of the sector to a nation, which seem rather futile or farfetched compared to the overall benefits. The economic drawback suggests that tourists lead to an increase in traffic congestion in the cities that they visit leading to wastage of time and money. This argument is inadequate because traffic congestions occur in some cities even in the absence of tourists. The notion that tourism leads to environmental damage only to construct resorts is impractical because the environmental impact is negligible compared to the pollution and overexploitation of non-renewable resources caused by local industries (Tatjana and Ralf 53). The negative social impact of tourism alluded by critics is unrealistic because the interaction between tourists and the local communities does not compel either party to change its beliefs and practices but enhances the strength of cultural diversity.

The social, economic, and environmental drawbacks of tourism cited by opponents are trivial compared to the benefits of the sector to nations in these spheres. The economy of a nation gains due to an increase in foreign exchange earnings and growth of the service sector. Social interaction between tourists and the local communities enrich others cultures, whereas eco-tourism promotes environmental conservation initiatives.
