Help with checking sentence

Hi

I was asked to rewrite the following sentence.

"But if we can't believe what newspapers write then on what should we base in order to vote well thought-out?"

I rewrote it as follows.

"But if we can't believe what the newspapers write, what should we base ourselves on in order to vote conscientiously?"

Could you check the rewritten sentence on grammatical correctness? Suggestions for rephrasing would be more than welcome as well!

An answer to the sentence in question is not expected. Emotion: wink

I suppose that there are many ways to do this, and this is mine: But if we can't believe what the newspapers write, on what should we base our decisions when we vote?
