The Girl Who Silenced The World For Five Minutes
The speech by David Suzuki’s daughter, Severn Suzuki, is written to be emotional and deliver the message that we should look further into the future to guarantee that the safety of the generations and species wont be hard. Suzuki begins by stating what she wants to accomplish, which is to make adults change their ways of how they live; this appeals to Logos. Suzuki then begins telling stories of how our planet is going downhill due to the greed in developed countries and the pollution produced. This immediately appeals to pathos because it develops emotions in the crowd, and since no one likes the idea of starvation, death or extinction, she sort of forces them onto her side, which appeals to pathos again. Suzuki also says this in a very loud, angry, and disappointed voice, which definitely captures the audiences attention. She also appeals to ethos by talking about how she is unable to eat fish caught from the stream because it is full of cancers, and that she is afraid to go out into the sun because of the holes in the ozone caused by humans. Suzuki then appeals to logos by giving a logical and modest message that if you don’t know how to fix it then you shouldn’t break it. Suzuki then appeals to ethos again by talking about a poor child that she had a conversation with in Brazil. The child said that if he were rich, he would use the money to feed the people of Brazil and remove the hunger. This also serves as a contrast to Northern American ideology where more money for yourself is always better, which generates guilt in the audience. This helps her speech because by making the audience feel guilty about how greedy they are, it immediately makes them want to change their ways, which is her entire goal of the presentation. She further makes the audience feel guilty by mentioning the rules that everyone was taught in kindergarten, and how the grownups cant even follow the simplest rules that a kindergartener could. By the end of the presentation, through appealing mainly to ethos and pathos, she has convinced the audience that everyone should make their actions reflect their words; meaning that if you say that you love someone, then you should build a better future for them.
Speech to Inform
This speech about the rhapsody music service by Scott Tauber is well worded, but lacks many good presentation techniques. At the beginning, Tauber asks people whether they use netflix or on demand services, which is a question that is almost guaranteed to get the majority of hands up. He then announces the rhapsody music streaming service and how it offers unlimited music for very little per month. This appeals to pathos because almost everyone enjoys and loves music. Tauber then explains the service; such as the different plans that they have available. This appeals to logos because its a fairly cheap service which gives you unlimited songs to listen to. A big downside to the speech is that he fills the speech with many unnecessary pauses, which slows the speech down immensely and doesn’t help him identify his main points. The most notable pause is when he goes to switch around the poster on the wall, which takes almost half a minute. A good use of pauses would be whenever you mention a very important point, but Tauber has a pause every few seconds. This is also paired with a very monotonous voice, which makes the speaker look uninterested, thus boring the crowd and causing them to focus their attention elsewhere. However, even though he uses very few presentation techniques he does maintain good eye contact throughout his speech. By doing so he wins back some of the interest he lost from the audience. The writing of the speech done quite well, but there is lots of unnecessary information in it, such as the end part which drags out very long and is hard to understand why you would go through all the trouble to do what he is explaining. This does not appear to logos because it just seems like a complete waste of time to hook up everything together, instead of just putting your speakers on full. He also appeals to ethos by stating that there is nobody in the class who is more passionate about music then himself. In doing so he tries to convince the audience that if its good enough for him, then its good enough for everyone else; portraying himself as a trustworthy figure.
Awesome Funny High School Graduation Speech
This speech is by a graduate from high school and is meant to entertain the audience. The speaker begins by cracking some jokes to set the mood for the speech. This loosens up the audience and makes them more relaxed so that they know what to expect from the rest of the speech. He continues to crack jokes throughout the speech and then speaks about how far they’ve come along from what they entered school with. This makes everyone feel uplifted and good about themselves since they have accomplished so much. Most of the speech is about telling uplifting stories and cracking jokes while doing so to make all the graduates relaxed for their last day of school. The graduate leaves off with saying that no matter where your aspirations take you, he wishes that you will have a good time.
