I need a little help with 2 passages I'm writing for a short story: 1. "Wil watched the small man plod away from them. ?Do you think we cantrust a Norseman, Oberon?? he asked. He knew little about the barbarians of the White Mountains, other than they were the original inhabitants of the Norseland and they had once fought the men of the Kingdom fiercely when the men had originally landed in the Norseland some twenty years ago." Should this be written with a "that" after the "other than" and the following "and"? : "Wil watched the small man plod away from them. ?Do you think we can trust a Norseman, Oberon?? he asked. He knew little about the barbarians of the White Mountains, other than that they were the original inhabitants of the Norseland and that they had once fought the men of the Kingdom fiercely when the men had originally landed in the Norseland some twenty years ago." 2. In the second passage, pay attention to the two last lines (note: thetwo characters in question, Toad (a character with a silly dialect) and Grimwulf, are in hiding and overhearing the following conversation):
Grimwulf nudged the door of the stable open slightly, and peered through the crack. Two Goth soldiers emerged into the grotto beyond, one tall and lanky, the other short and squat. They marched across the room at a brisk pace, grim expressions etched on their pale faces. The short Goth shot his companion a worried look. ?Are you sure those were his words?? he asked nervously. The tall Goth nodded. ?Told them to me himself.? ?To ?get rid of it??? The tall Goth grimaced. ?The owners of the creature are at large in the Fortress, and Guldan wants to deny them any means of escape,? he explained. ?Furthermore, the creature is taking up precious space and resources.? He reached for his belt and unfastened a long key dangling from the buckle. ?It shouldn?t cause us too much trouble, if we stick to my plan.? The short Goth shook his head. ?I wish Guldan had gotten someone else to do the task,? he grumbled. His companion shot him a disdainful look. ?Quit your complaining,? he growled. ?What would you rather be doing? Fighting the Kingdom scum in the cold outside?? He stooped down to fiddle with the double door?s bolt. After a moment?s tinkering, the bolt popped upwards with a click. ?You should be thankful for these menial tasks. They?ll keep your worthless hide alive for another day.? He pulled the double doors open wide, and the two soldiers stepped inside. Behind the Norseman, Toad let forth a nervous grunt. ?Toad no like the sound of that,? he muttered. ?Neither do I,? Grimwulf concurred. He pushed the stable door open, and slipped outside. ?Come on then. Let?s find out what they?re up to.?
My question here is, should the last two lines read:
?Toad no liked the sound of that,? he muttered. ?Neither did I,? Grimwulf concurred. He pushed the stable door open, and slipped outside. ?Come on then. Let?s find out what they?re up to.?
It's a matter of timing, and I'm not sure which one works best.
Thanks, Khuddle
