Help with a sentence

Does the highlighted sentence mean:

but, she (Whiteread) was not entirely detached from the situation, so that when the controversy went through several stages and the project as a whole loked time and again as though it might be pulled altogether, she did reach the point where she simply left matters to run their own course come what may.

Context:

The artist’s own relationship to the work is quite interesting in this regard because it is fairly evident from Whiteread’s comments in several interviews that she did not really wish to get caught up personally in the local or, indeed, national politicking. Though by no means entirely detached from the situation, with the controversy having gone through several stages and the project as a whole looking time and again as though it might be pulled altogether, Whiteread did reach the point where she simply left matters to run their own course come what may.

Top answer

The artist, Whiteread, has indicated that she does not like to get involved with the politicking that can arise over a work of art. And indeed, although she did have some involvement in the controversy over the project when it was going through its several stages (it had been threatened with cancellation repeatedly), she eventually just stood aside and let things turn out as they may.

  • And indeed, although she did have some involvement in the controversy over the project when it was going through its several stages (it had been threatened with cancellation repeatedly), she eventually just stood aside and let things turn out as they may.
