What is correct PLEASE?

Host families rarely love their exchange so much that they don't want them to leave.

I wouldn't use 'their exchange" to refer to a person -- how about 'their exchange student"?

To me, "exchange" by itself would refer to the experience, not the person, as in "Students rarely love their exchange so much that they don't want it to end."
