Help! Verbal Processes

Question

I have done 50 of these for my independent research of Great Expectations and I'm going insane questioning myself. Can anyone look at what I have done and see if it is correct.

I know think these are material, but I'm confused by Actor, goal, beneficiary and range and when they apply?

This is way too much for a single post. I'll try to answer a few, and maybe someone else will help with the others. Or maybe you can split this up into several posts, posting only a small amount of material in one post.

I'll just give you my first impressions.

1. In 5.1 'you little devil' can't be a goal. It's the addressee — the person to whom the command is addressed.

2. In 8.5 are you sure that in your methodology 'who' is an actor? The way I see it, 'who' is the recipient of the material process because the sentence is in the passive voice. 'by flints' seems to be "Instrumental" to me — the instruments by which the cutting is accomplished. Maybe that's "Scope" in your system.

This brings up the point that you haven't said what the choices are for filling in these cells. I don't even know if "Instrumental" is a possibility in your system. (No one else will either.)

3. In 9.1 "don" is impossible as anything. "don't" is "do" and "not" ("n't"). It's an auxiliary verb that goes with 'cut'. It can't possibly be nominal. "my throat" sounds like a goal to me.

4. In 3.1 "found out" sounds like a mental process to me because it means "came to know".

5. "was Pip" identifies. "was dead and buried" is attributive.
