Marriage: shaadii

Arranged Marriages..Dowry.
Although illegal it’s hardly covert…but this is India, anything is possible!…..chaaligaa!
Marriage for millions of Indian families is a dreaded financial burden, a cause of debt and debt bondage and a contributor to death and misery.
Typical Scenario.
Once Upon A Time… as all good fairy tales begin..…Boy meets Girl, they fall in love, get married, and live happily ever after…The End

The Dowry Plan of action

1. Future ‘In-laws’ meet Girl’s family to discuss her credentials: Dowry, education (which is not related to any future career plans whatsoever).
2. ‘Boy’ despite being 40 yrs old) is informed he is getting married on a particular date.
3. Boy is taken to meet / see / talk to (not necessarily all three actions occur at the same meet) the prospective Girl for at least five minutes. Alternatively, he may be too busy in which case he will be shown a photograph or two if he’s lucky. However, as they say ‘Dowry is in the eye of the beholder’ when it comes to choosing.
4. Dowry requirements agreed by both families.
5. Boy marries Girl with pomp and ceremony. (paid for by the Girl’s family).
6. The Boy, his Parents and the Dowry live happily ever after….The End

I guess you’re wondering what became of the ‘Girl’ in this plot? Let’s have an action replay and take a look at family bliss. Why there she is…just like Cinderella in the kitchen learning all her new duties so mother-in-law can now take things easy. However, there will be no Prince Charming or glass slippers in this fairy tale. “Welcome, this is Home.. Sweet Home”[the girl’s prison and the woman’s workhouse]. No doubt they will have lots of children and all live happily ever after….The End …The one charm of marriage is that it makes a life of deception absolutely necessary for both parties….You know, I think I preferred ‘Once Upon A Time’… so call me old fashioned!

Consider for a moment that 70% of the population live in rural areas, and strictly follow tradition. Sons and daughters respect the wishes of their parents and readily accept whatever matrimonial arrangements that have been made on their behalf by the parents. Therefore, the above marriage scenario is quite commonplace. Of course in the middle classes the rules may vary, but it’s the exception and not the rule when you look at the percentages.
Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance.
