Help to sentence

Hi teachers. This is the sentence:

She came home to find her husband in the midst of a massacre, completely trashing her apartment.

I have two questions to it:

1. Can I use 'massacre' here (even though he isn't killing any people) or is it very unusual?

2. Is 'in the midst of' a natural choice here?

Yes. Both 'midst' and 'middle' will work there.
