HELP to pursue NURSING???

Hi I'm 18 and I'm from the Philippines. I'm currently studying in one of the most prestigious University in the Philippines, Well, Since I was little, I wanted to be a doctor because I actually wanted to help those in need. When I took entrance exams in the universities...I actually failed all of the entrance exams.. I was devastated because all the students in our school were entering the college they really wanted. But fortunately, my dad has a friend that works in this university and helped me get in so now I'm currently enrolled to BS NURSING which is my second choice than Pharmacy. So I started to study in the college this year June. Now, it is already september and I have doubts since I started June because NURSING is damn HARD!!! really HARD! I mean I did evrything, but still I fail in chemistry..even other subjetcs... So I realized maybe med is really not for me... I'm not a critical thinker and I'm not even good in Math... I did well in High School..I studied in a chinese Catholic school here in the Phiippines(I'm a pure chinese but grew up here, so I know how to speak in chinese and filipino) I did well because I was hard working but it's different now in COllege esp if you are taking a crash course!!... This are the things I considered: Nursing, If I continue.. I was thinking in the future that there are few job opportunities because there are already a lot of nurses. Even though you would work abroad in the future, I don't like because my family is here. and they say working abroad has a lot of money but the standard of living there is very high so it's pretty the same if you work here in the Philippines. To be a doctor, I think I can't do it anymore because, it really takes a long time to study and the tuition fee is almost 400,00 pesos a year... it's really a lot of money and risky if I would not be able to pass the licensure exam. then there comes the specialization. My mom really wants me to be a doctor but I really am planning to shift into HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT course..my dad approves of it and mom can't do anything ,I want to be in medicine field really but well I'm thinking practical and the salary is not enough and like I'll be 40-50 years old before I become rich and a famous doctor, AND I DON NOT WANT TO HELP THE SICK IF IT IS FOR MONEY.. DO you think my decision is right? anyone?.. I just feel that this decision of mine would really have an impact and I feel that I would do better in other fields...I just am scared if I would make a bad choice..really scared...=(

Hi Madelaine, firstly, just one little point, when you write such a long post, it is much easier for others to read online in a forum like this if you break up the post into paragraphs with a space between each one. Anyway, regarding your question, here are my thoughts on it: You are very young, and while your parents have your best interests at heart, you have to remember that you are an individual with your own unique talents and skills. You are not your parents.

  • They might want you to study 'a profession' such as medicine or law, but if you are not talented in a certain area, studying something like this because your parents expect it of you, will only make you very stressed and miserable.
  • You could end up spending the next 4 years of your life studying, so you need to make sure it is a) something you enjoy and are interested in and b) something that is not too difficult for you.
