Help thanks

I know how to distingusih between preposition 'to' and toward 'to'.
I had to use 'to' before school, but not before downtown.
This is my question.
In what cases, don't I need to use 'to' before certain place?

There's no rule. You'll just have to learn them, I think. These are the ones that spring to mind, but there are probably others: I went to school BUT I went downtown/uptown.
