Help Teach 3rd Graders about Similarities and Differences

Question

Hello, I am teaching third graders about cutlural differences in regards to how different cultures address basic human needs (food, water, clothing and shelter).

I thought I would also incorporated a lesson on the benefits of the internet. SO!

If you are game, respond to this post and tell me so that I can tell them...your favorite cultural food, cultural clothing that you might wear, what kind of houses we might see in your neck of the world. Then include a link to a picture of an example of the above.

I will make a class project utilizing the links sent to allow them to 'surf' and see these pictures that we recieve.

Dear Mrs Crabtree,

I am presently working in Fort Severn, Ontario. Ontario is a province which is equivalent to a state in the United States. This province is one of ten in Canada. There are also three territories, one of which is one third of Canada's area. Toronto is Ontario's capital. Fort Severn would be close to 2000 km north, and a bit west of Toronto. Toronto is on the shore of Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes.

Canada is a country that borders on the United States, including the Alaskan border. Canada is the second largest country in area in the world.

Yesterday, on the news, they informed the public that of the 1,051 Americans asked if they knew Canada, only 28% said that they did. This research had been completed the day before.

Fort severn is an isolated community some 8 km up the Severn river from Hudson Bay. Isolated means you must fly to get there. No public road, maintained by the government reaches this community.

It is a reserve, and the people living here are Cree. They have been living around the Hudson Bay coast low land area for millenia. Recent archological digs have found bones and artifacts that confirm this.

My ancestry is: French from France; Irish from Ireland and native Anishnabee (another Native American people). I was raised as a French Canadian. The youngest of my ancestors date back five generations.

I like all kinds of foods, and seldom eat the foods I was raised with. For example, I eat meat pie at Christmas. I seldom eat pea soup. I love stir fries. I use Taiwanese recipes. I love recipes from India, Vietnam, China, East India. I also really enjoy Mexican food, like quesadilas. So, I have become "multi-cultural" where food is concerned. When I next get a chance, I will learn to make sushi. I really like those.

Working here in Fort Severn, I am allowed to wear jeans at work. They are very laid back about clothes. They are not formal about it. I like that. Jeans and sports wear is my favorite kind of clothes. Loose fitting and comfortable is what I like. I very seldomly wear dresses.

Houses here are small sized bungalo. They are now building bigger units that have a more modern look to them. These are being rented out. It is the first time that people have the option of renting. Others in the community don't pay for housing at all. Houses have a surface foundation because of the permafrost. This creates a very low ceiling basement used only to access the bottom floor.

I don't have personal pictures posted right now. I will work on it, and try to get back to you. I am on holiday right now, that is how come I have the time to write this post.
