I think we'd be more likely to use the infinitive. help him [to] take out the garbage, rather than help him taking out the garbage.

Please help him [to] do the laundry, rather than Please help him doing the laundry.

Shall I help him [to] lift the crate, rather than Shall I help him lifting the crate.
