Help!! Simple, progessive and perfect verb tense

I'm trying to help my 6th grade daughter with verb forms. Can someone define the difference between simple, progressive, and perfect? She's able to find the subject, predicate, and tense but she cannot tell if it's simple, progressive or pefect. The examples I have found on the net indicate that a simple verb tense means completed action. Progressive verb tense means continued action and perfect verb tense means completed action. I'm having a difficult time understanding the difference between these three words. Thanks for your help.

It's easy-- it's all in the form: A progressive (or continuous tense) uses 'be' + an -ing verb form: 'I am running, he was sitting'. A perfect verb form uses 'have' + an -ed (or irregular past participle) verb form: 'I have eaten, he has spoken, she had stopped'. A simple verb tense uses only the base present or past: 'she eats, they went, I will come'.

  • Progressive perfect is also possible: 'I have been running, they will have been skiing'.
